The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has petitioned the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS), United States and the United Kingdom over the Kano Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal that nullified the victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Recall that NNPP had raised the alarm over clerical errors in the verdict of the Appeal Court, claiming that judgement was in Favour of its Governor Yusuf, but was doctored by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Acting Chairman of the Party, Abba Kawu Ali, who led some protesters, supporters of Yusuf, to the various embassies in Abuja, sought the intervention of the international community.
Ali appealed to the judiciary especially the Supreme Court to live up to its responsibility.
He contended that in 2019, the embattled Yusuf won the governorship election, but the victory was snatched by the APC.
He said: “From the look of things, there are clandestine moves to truncate the will of the vast majority of the people of Kano State with respect to the Governor they freely and willingly elected on March 18, 2023, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“You would recall that during the 2019 general elections, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusif contested and won the Governorship election on the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP), which our group joined just a few months to the elections.
“However, the mandate was snatched away by the powers that be under very controversial circumstances, and this day -light robbery was given a seal of authority by the judiciary.
“It is common knowledge that in 2023, with a few months to the election, the Kwankwasiyya political Movement and The National Movement TNM joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party, a relatively unknown party without strong structures whatsoever, and were able to win Kano State Governorship election resoundingly in a free and fair election as they did in 2019 on the platform of the PDP.
In addition to NNPP winning the Kano State Governorship seat in the 2023 General election, the party also won 2 Senatorial seats, 19 Federal House of Representatives seats and 30 State Assembly seats across the country within a short period of the collaboration.”
Also, Ali called on Vice President Kashim Shettima, Northern Governors forum, Northern Senators forum, Northern House of Representatives forum, Northern Conference of Speakers, Northern Elders forum, Norther Christian Association, to intervene in forestall looming unrest in Kano State.
ECOWAS Head of Administration, William to Towah, said ECOWAS would look into the matter.
