Borno holds LG elections

Borno on Saturday held election of chairmen and counsellors for the 27 local government areas of the state.

It is the second local government election held since 2019.

The Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) said it has made adequate preparations to ensure a free and peaceful election.

BOSIEC Chairman, Lawan Maina earlier on Friday, said election will be held to dill vacant positions of chairmen of 27 local governments in the state and 312 counsellors for the wards. A

“A total of 27 local government chairmen and 312 counselors for
312 wards will be elected,” Maina told journalists.

He disclosed that six out of 14 political parties that earlier informed the commission to participate in the exercise, obtained nomination and expression of interest forms. These according to him include the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Social Democratic Party (ADP) among others.

He explained election for three local governments including Abadam, Guzamala and Marte in the northern part of the state will be held at Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in neighbouring council areas due to security challenge.

Marte’s election holds in Ngala IDPs camps on the Nigeria-Cameroon border. Likewise, that of Abadam takes place at Mobbar near Niger border while Guzamala’s election holds at Monguno IDLs camps, according to the commission chairman.

The police on Saturday said they have deployed adequate cops to provide security around the polling centers. There are a total of 5, 725 units base on the update from the state electoral commission.

The Sun observes that election did not start early in Ost parts of Maiduguri, the stats capital as expected due to late arrival of election materials. There was also low turnout of voters in most part of the city even at midday.
