Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for a united front between the government and the media to enhance Nigeria’s development during a meeting with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
He emphasised the media’s crucial role as the nation’s conscience and advocated a balanced partnership focused on national unity and economic growth.
According to a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the vice president said: “Let us work together for the nation. What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us. We are now in the period of governance and not politics.”
Insisting on balance and objectivity in their reportage, Shettima urged the editors to maintain their role of a watchdog, while supporting national development.
“When we do good, please commend us. When we are going astray, guide us because we have to salvage this nation; not for our own sake but for the sake of our children and grandchildren,” he said.
Acknowledging the financial struggles faced by media outlets, he pledged government’s support for quality journalism.
“My heart bleeds for the Nigerian media because of the dwindling economic fortunes they face. Be rest assured we will do whatever it takes to support the media in continuing their work,” he said.
Guild President, Eze Anaba, expressed readiness to collaborate while maintaining independence, highlighting the upcoming ‘All Nigeria Editors Conference’ set for November 7 to 9 in Bayelsa State.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents, Anaba, who is also the editor of Vanguard Newspapers, shared insights stating: “We came to brief him about our forthcoming conference and to discuss some national issues.”
The upcoming conference, scheduled for November in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, aims to address pressing topics such as the economy, security and the state of media in Nigeria.
Anaba emphasised the importance of the dialogue, saying: “This conference is coming at a very critical moment for our country. We believe there is a need to continue discussions on how to deepen our democracy and find solutions to our economic challenges.”
Anaba reiterated the media’s essential role in holding the government accountable, saying: “It is our responsibility to hold government to account. We are committed to good governance.”
The NGE is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping discussions that will impact Nigeria’s future.
NGE Secretary General, Iyobosa Uwugiaren, on his part highlighted their commitment to democracy during the meeting, saying: “We want them, the vice president and president, to be part of the conversation in Yenagoa.”
