Buhari, Kwara gov, PDP, Emir mourn as Saraki matriarch dies at 89

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former president, Muhammadu Buhari, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Emir of Ilorin and chairman, Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji  Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari and Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) have condoled with the Sarakis on the death of their matriarch, Chief Florence Morenike Saraki, which occurred on Tuesday, June 18.

Former Senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki, announced her demise via his official verified social media handle.

The widow of the late Senate leader and immediate past Waziri of Ilorin, Abubakar Olusola Saraki, was 89.

Buhari, in his condolence message, said he was saddened by the demise of Chief Saraki, a strong pillar of the Saraki dynasty and a mother firmly committed to family values and the welfare of the less privileged.

“The commitment and resilience she had shown as she supported the family following the death of the patriarch, Senator Abubakar Olusola Saraki, and Waziri of Ilorin is praiseworthy.

“She was a hardworking and people-friendly community leader whose kindness and thoughtfulness towards others is an inspiration. She will surely be missed by many in Kwara state and at the centre.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the former senate president and my noteworthy minister, for whom their mother meant so much. May her soul rest in peace.”

Kwara State governor, AbdulRazaq, urged the Sarakis to be consoled by the fine legacies of their matriarch, according to a condolence message issued by Rafiu Ajakaye, the chief press secretary.

He prayed to God to repose her soul and uphold the family after her death.

On his part, the Emir Sulu-Gambari described the deceased as a wonderful mother, great philanthropist and virtuous wife of Dr. Olusola Saraki, the late Waziri of Ilorin whose contributions to humanity will forever be remembered.

“The late Madam Florence Morenike Saraki lived a fulfilled life with numerous accomplishments,” he stated. 

Similarly, the Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a statement by its chairman, Babatunde Mohammed, described the late matriarch as a strong pillar of support, not only for Dr. Saraki and her other children but also for those beyond her immediate family. It described her as a remarkable matriarch whose life was marked by profound impact and unwavering dedication to her family and Kwara State.

“She was a mother in the truest sense, providing steadfast support to her children and standing as a formidable pillar within the Saraki dynasty.

“Our party urged the former Senate president to find strength in the knowledge that Mama lived an impactful life and to an advanced age, knowing fully well that she raised her children to global heights such that the whole world is benefiting from her great motherhood. This alone will continue to inspire generations.

“While we grieve her departure, we take solace in the rich legacy she leaves behind—a testament to a life well-lived in service, compassion, and resilience. Her contributions to the lives of those around her and her enduring influence within the Saraki family will continue to inspire us all.”

The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) in a condolence message signed by its National President, Alhaji AbdulMumini Abdulmalik, described her death as a big loss to the renowned family, good people of Ilorin Emirate and the nation at large.

According to it, late Saraki was an embodiment of humility, hard work and fraternity.

The union sympathized with the Senator Saraki and Senator Gbemisola Saraki, former minister of state, other members of Saraki family, the Kwara State Government and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.
